Pets can be a lot of work, but they can offer you much more than just their cuteness. A trip to your local animal rescue shelter may even keep you happy and healthier. Here are 5 ways pets can improve your mental wellbeing.

  1. Pets can help fight depression. Studies show that their abilities to melt our hearts and make us smile can increase our serotonin and dopamine levels, thereby increasing our feelings of happiness and wellbeing. They can also cure our blues by acting as supportive listeners. Cats and dogs are keenly aware of their owners’ emotions, offering support and love when going through the toughest times.
  1. Pets can also curb anxiety. Studies have shown the calming effects petting an animal can have on our brain. Even watching fish swim in an aquarium can reduce muscle tension. When you pet your animal, the body releases the hormone Oxytocin, easing stress by reducing your blood pressure. More importantly, pets keep us grounded. They remind us to let loose and play after a stressful day at work. The work and play they require can help take our mind off any anxieties we are experiencing. Similarly, pets can help us feel more at ease as they take on the role of protector.
  1. We all know pets can cure loneliness and feelings of isolation. The unconditional love from a pet is indescribable. No matter your mood, they are always enthusiastic to see you. Their loyalty helps you feel purposeful and loved. Similarly, taking care of a pet (feeding, bathing, walking) keeps you centered on something other than yourself, giving you a purpose. Our pets can also serve as great conversation starters. Whether it’s a neighbor commenting as I walk my dogs, a coworker spotting their picture on my desk, or socializing with other dog owners as they play at the park, I’ve met so many others thanks to my dogs!
  1. Pets help motivate you to be more active. Walking your pet can benefit both you and your animal! Exercise can help clear your mind while simultaneously enhancing your mood by boosting your serotonin levels. Studies even show that dog and cat owners are less likely to die from heart attacks. Getting your animal outside can also help expose you to the sun, giving you the vitamin D needed to keep your mood elevated.
  1. Our pets also help us with stability and routine. Pets can help us keep present and connected to our surroundings as they help us adhere to structure and routine. Routine can be very therapeutic for those struggling with a mental illness, and pets can serve as motivators for routine. Some pets require feeding, bathroom, and exercise breaks. For someone struggling with depression, getting out of bed to feed your dog can be just the motivation you need to carry on.
