Finding the right therapist can be a puzzling process.

In our last post, we started a list of affordable counseling options in Austin.  Today, we’re extending that list for you.

At Counseling South Austin, we offer affordable counseling services on a sliding scale of $40 to $80 per session. You can learn more about our therapists here.

If our fees or location don’t fit what you need, don’t fret!

There are many excellent community agencies that receive grants and other funding that can offer services at a lower price point.

And, most of these agencies have several clinics around Austin, making it more likely that there’s one near you!

So, if you’re looking for affordable counseling in Austin, here are a couple of other clinics & agencies you can try:

1.) LifeWorks

What to expect:

LifeWorks is a nonprofit focused on helping youth and young adults, many of whom have faced abuse, neglect, or violence in their homes. LifeWorks offers counseling services to individuals, families, couples, and adults on an income-based sliding scale of $25-$125.

How it works:

You call to schedule an intake appointment. Intakes are conducted by phone and last about 30 minutes.  Bring proof of income to your initial, in-office appointment, when your session fee will be determined.

Things to keep in mind:

This agency also offers specialized counseling programs for individuals accused of domestic violence. LifeWorks also offers medication management services to youth & young adults enrolled in a LifeWorks, SafePlace, or Communities in Schools program.

2.) Waterloo Counseling

What to expect:

Waterloo is a private, nonprofit organization offering low cost counseling services for individuals, couples, and families. It is a place where everyone can receive mental health services in a culturally-affirming and accepting environment. Some services offered are tailored to support the LGBTQ community.

How it works:

Call 512-444-9922 ext. 100 for information or to schedule an appointment. The best time to speak with someone by phone is Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or Monday through Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Leave a voice mail for a return call by the next business day.

Things to keep in mind:

Please bring proof of ID and income to your first appointment. There are also a number of intake forms available on the website that you need to complete prior to your initial session. Be sure to arrive 20 minutes early to your initial appointment.

3.) Samaritan Center

What to expect:

The Samaritan Center offers counseling for individuals, couples, families and groups of all ages. The therapists here are sensitive to spiritual issues and will offer spiritual guidance at the client’s request.

How it works:

Call 512-451-7337 to schedule an appointment, office hours are from 9 am to 6 pm. There are also a number of intake forms available on the website that you need to complete prior to your initial session.

Things to keep in mind:

The Samaritan Center also hosts the Hope for Heroes program, which provides counseling, integrative medicine and peer support to current service members, veterans and military families.
